Beijing 2022 Design Day Marathon

For the past two weeks, I have had the pleasure of working for the 2022 Design Day Marathon workshop. The Design Day Marathon, now in its 7th year, is one of the most important academic activities during Beijing Design Week. The Design Marathon is a large-scale international design workshop initiated by the Science·Art·Fashion Festival and jointly organised by the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology and many participating universities.

This year’s theme was ‘A Graceful Life’, and I worked with five international students from China, Indonesia, Taiwan and South Korea on a project entitled, Design for Good. We worked together to craft a concept to explore how design can make a difference. The students chose to work on the important topic of sexual assault—an issue facing many women and girls worldwide.

Over the two weeks, we worked to develop a visual response to this theme, and the students developed an interactive installation named The Erotic Irony. The results of this two-week collaboration can be seen below, and I am delighted to announce that my team was awarded a bronze medal in this competition.

Participating in this prestigious event has been a challenging but ultimately enriching experience, and I am proud of my team’s dedication, hard work and creative talent. Working with these young women was a pleasure, and I am in awe at what they achieved in such a short period.

I want to thank the organisers of the Design Day Marathon for such a fantastic opportunity and also extend my thanks to Martin Lui of CEIDA for the initial invitation. Participating in this wonderful event has been an honour and a pleasure.
